Frequently Asked Questions
-
A hand thrown pot is made by hand on a potter’s wheel, and requires specialist artisan skill, giving each pot a one-of-a-kind shape and organic feel which looks beautiful in a natural setting. By comparison, many mass-produced pots are replicated in moulds, so they will be completely symmetrical, and lack the character of a hand thrown pot.
-
Yes, once finished before firing each pot has a drainage hole cut into the base.

Barbary’s pots can withstand the harshest of UK winters due to our unique blend of high-quality Moroccan clay from three mineral-rich regions across the country, made possible by the rare combination of natural resources. These minerals include iron and silica which when fired enhances the terracotta’s durability and resistance to frost and freezing temperatures. If our care instructions are followed, your pot will last for years to come, withstanding temperatures as low as -20°C. Many of our original pots from the 90s are still in great condition today.
-
Yes, our terracotta pots develop a lovely natural patina over time due to high mineral deposits and weathering. This aging process adds a unique character to each pot, enhancing its rustic charm.

Absolutely! Our terracotta pots are perfect for indoor use. We recommend using a Barbary saucer to prevent water from seeping onto surfaces. All of our pots, particularly the Menara and Agdal work beautifully as decorative interior elements, complementing a wide range of design styles.
-
Yes, our pots are handcrafted by skilled Moroccan artisans using traditional techniques. We prioritise fair trade practices, ensuring that our artisans are paid fairly and work in safe conditions. As a business, we pay particular attention to our carbon footprint in order to track and offset where possible.
-
Yes, sustainability is at the core of our production. Our pots are made from natural, locally sourced clay, and the production process relies on age-old, low-energy craftsmanship rather than mass production. Currently, our pots are fired using a gas fired kiln, however we are exploring eco-friendly alternatives such as crushed olive stones or solar power. Where possible, we use packaging that has minimal environmental impact, and remove all packaging on delivery to re-use elsewhere.
-
As all of our terracotta pots are still traditionally hand thrown on a potter’s wheel, each pot is totally unique with its own individual characteristics, but we select the best matching pots for any order.

Roots do not like to be left cold and wet, so it's important to ensure good drainage to encourage healthy growth. Before adding soil or your liner, lay crock at the bottom to create space for the water to drain. Crock can be anything from broken bits of pot, to large stones. Crock can also add weight to the base for taller designs.
Raising your pot slightly off the ground can also improve drainage. See Barbary’s range of saucers for a stylist accompaniment.
Once planted, consider adding a top layer of gravel or slate chippings will help maintain moisture levels in the soil, while adding a decorative finish.
Be sure to choose peat-free compost for your planting needs. The carbon locked in peat gets released as carbon dioxide when harvested, contributing to climate change.
-
It really depends on how you plan to use it:
For better moisture retention, we recommend lining your pot with a porous geotextile membrane to provide a barrier between the soil and terracotta.
For indoor use, why not grab a Barbary saucer to prevent water drainage causing stains on surfaces.
For outdoor use, you can leave them untreated for natural aging or apply a sealant for extra durability.
For cleaning, we recommend warm mild soapy water and gently scrubbing with a soft brush or sponge.
-
